Sofaya at the Grand White festival

Songstress Sofaya talks business, feminism and magents

The 27 year old singer was born in Soweto and moved quite a bit while she was young. She recently graduated with a Business Management and Entrepreneurship qualification from the Gordon Institute of Business Science (Gibs).

Sofaya states that her inspiration for her new single Amagents came from a large part of her personality.  She is business minded and is aware that the music industry is a business and quite male dominated. Her new song is her way of saying she’s arrived and is equal to the task of taking on this world as an equal.

“I want to be perceived as a business person.  That I’m not just a singer that music is not just about entertainment, it’s a business. Music not only feeds the person who sings what I want to create, in time with grace, is an empire that will feed other people just through music alone. We’ve seen a lot of international acts create people’s dreams. Whether it’s from your stylist, your producer, to the person who does your hair all the way down to the technical staff that’s what I want to create.”

Sofaya stresses that she believes in woman empowerment without undermining men. She is wary about calling herself a feminist as she feels the meaning has been twisted.

The song is talking about being a boss lady, a woman in control, holding it together in the kitchen, on the streets, in the boardroom and the home. Being all those things, being a powerful woman but without undermining men. Without saying I’m more powerful than a man, because that’s not my place, that’s not what I am. I’m powerful as woman in my own right.”

Sofaya refers to herself as an “old soul” when it comes to music. She loves old school funk, and locally loves the late Lebo Mathosa and Brenda Fassie’s sound.
